What will the first counseling session look like?
I first spend time getting to know you. We will spend time identifying what your needs are and what goals you would like to accomplish in therapy. I feel it is important to work on calming and grounding techniques in order to reduce the symptoms that you are experiencing. Healing does not occur when someone's system is overwhelmed and if a therapist pushes a client past what their tolerance level allows it will only increase their symptoms. In order to reprocess trauma a person needs to feel calm, connected and grounded. I will follow the client's lead and allow them to set the tone and pace of the session.
What is EMDR? Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful method of doing psychotherapy that works on the physiological and emotional basis of problems to facilitate change. Although EMDR started out as a treatment for trauma, it had been applied to a number of conditions including phobias, chronic pain and grief. It uses Bi-lateral stimulation in a specific protocol for lasting results.
It is never too late to be who you might have been.
